the story so far

November 7th

So my BFF Jill …uh I mean Phil… is 12 days from her birthday and it’s time for some brainstorming. What do you get a 24 year old who has one child, one days from being born, and …I don’t even know?

It’s strange to think of gifts for a person, even one you know inside out and backwards. This is my sister. She has it all – right? I mean, she’s always been excruciatingly smart and pretty. She got her degree, she married the man she loves, she had one gloriously handsome kid, and she’s got her second just days from arriving.

Gifts are about gestures towards happiness. You give someone something you know they’ll enjoy. Something that will enhance their life or something they’ve wanted. But what do you give the girl who has everything?

I guess it always just depends upon what you consider to be “everything” – but what is that really?

They’re broke and don’t get to save up for anything. I mean, they’re not living poorly, but it’s not like they’re well off. I could give her cash. I could give her gift cards. I could give them necessities. But where’s the fun of the gift in that? I can’t think of anything the girl would like. Guess I’m off to Etsy or Pinterest or something…

May have to use my “Phone a Friend” option any minute now…

  1. I’m a big fan of “memory” gifts, especially for BFFs. DIY collages, or something cute with pictures, that just remind her of all of the good times she’s had, whether it is with you, her hubby, her kids… 🙂 There are TONS of ideas on Pinterest though, for sure. Also, chocolate is a personal favorite, haha. If she likes it!

    1. Thanks! I think I have an idea that definitely fits with the “memory gift” category, but I’m not gonna say what it is in case she happens to stumble past here before her birthday 😉 Perhaps I’ll post about it afterwards! Thank you!
