Movies

It seems to me that I am always having conversations with my friends in which I say something to the effect of “oh yeah, that’s in my top ten movies for sure, no question!” But I stopped to think about it today, and I realised I really don’t know if there are only ten movies in my “top ten”. I have a feeling there are quite a few more than that, but for the sake of concision of speech, I’m determined to whittle down the numbers and discover what my ten favorite movies actually are. So, here we go. Here’s my top ten favorite movies, and a blurb about why they will also be on your top ten once you see them!

Beautiful Girls – an innocent story about real people and the real love they sometimes encounter. Kind of a depressing film.

Darjeeling Limited – a story about brothers coming together over their father’s death and the trip they take together. A very people centered story. Another depressing sort though.

Lost in Translation – a chance encounter and an accidental sort of love. Very character centered, slightly heart wrenching.

Young Frankenstein – a horror comedy, definitely one of the funniest and most quotable movies I saw as a child and re-watch at least once per year.

Clueless – a highly comedic satire on Austen as well as a commentary on today’s youth. Worth all the eye rolls that accompany it.

Donnie Darko – a dark film, kind of depressing, but also mind opening in the strangest way. You’ll have to watch it to understand. (I have dreams that remind me of this movie far too much.)

Casablanca – the most classic of all classic love stories. So beautiful and so sad.

Into the Wild – what an adventure. Also one of my favorite soundtracks. This guy’s trek is just beyond inspirational.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – trippy and mind opening and beautiful and sad all in one.

Last Days of Disco – a commentary on society, with a bit of humor and a bit of darkness and a lot of reality.

I’ve seen all of these movies several times each. At least.

Full disclosure? I’ve had this post saved as a draft for probably over six months now. And it’s because I have incredible indecision when it comes to making an even slightly concrete statement. Even if it’s something as trivial as which movies I like the most. Don’t get me wrong, I’m quite in love with all these movies, but there are just soo many that require an honorable mentions. I’m actually nervous to include an honorable mention at all because I would feel (ridiculously) bad if I left something off of that list…

Oh to hell with it. Here’s some for an honorable mention: The Breakfast Club, When Harry Met Sally, Indiana Jones movies, Star Wars movies, Mars Attacks, The Invention of Lying, Braveheart, Dead Poets Society, Bottle Rocket, O Brother Where Art Thou?, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums, To Kill a Mockingbird, Cheech and Chong’s Up in Smoke, Fantasia, the Monty Python movies, Garden State, Serenity, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Metropolitan

This list could go on forever, but I’ll just stop while I’m ahead. There are so many more great films that deserve mention but there simply isn’t the time. If this list doesn’t give you a notion of what I’d consider good movies, I don’t know what will. And hey, I’m always open to movie recommendations should you have one!
