(I should start off by saying, unrelatedly, that if you read my last post and were wondering, my sister’s surgery went without a hitch, so she is successfully recovering and trying to deal with temporarily being confined to crutches.)
My friends came to visit me! Various friends from all over the country visit from time to time, but this visit was a very long awaited and somewhat improbable visit, and it actually happened! Two of my best friends in all the world came to stay for a week. One came all the way from Florida and the other came from DC. I haven’t seen Florida Boy in basically almost two years, and I haven’t seen DC Girl in closer to three years. My, how time flies.
I had been anticipating getting to go on a couple of great hikes and do a lot of outdoor fall stuff, but it froze for the first time the night they arrived and being from warmer climes, they weren’t too keen on being out in the ‘cold’. So we watched movies and played video games and card games and drank a lot and ate out every day and did other indoor stuff.
I carved my first Jack O’Lantern! I’ve never carved a pumpkin in my life if you can believe it, so I was quite proud of how it turned out. (Even though I made one of the eyes crooked so it turned out looking doofy instead of scary. Oh well.)
We only ended up going on a walk once, and that was for about half an hour and it was just on a trail that led through town to the Chinese take-out place. I’d been excited to take them up Mount Ascutney, or at the very least, the tiny ‘Mount’ Arrowhead. I guess it just wasn’t in the cards.
But DC Girl taught me how to make martinis (which are my favorite thing, if I haven’t mentioned that before…) and we watched a couple funny movies. Oh yes, and they both like to play card games, which I absolutely despise, so they tried to teach me rummy and it wasn’t pretty. So I taught them Bull Shit and won three rounds of that before DC Girl taught us a new game, and was furious when I won that too. (The martinis were helping!)
The only downside of the whole week was when my dad met my friends and proceeded to try to auction me off to be Florida Boy’s wife. I wasn’t amused, and I couldn’t for the life of me tell what Florida Boy thought of it all, considering his complete lack of facial expression or response. DC Girl thought it was hilarious, as did my dad. (My dad also told Florida Boy that once I lose a few pounds I’d be perfect for him… I nearly set my dad on fire in that moment!)
Other than that it was a blissful week of staying up late partying and then sleeping in late the next morning, and then just being generally leisurely with the best of friends. I can’t even express how happy I am that I got to see them before leaving the country for an unspecified amount of time. It had been too long, and their visit was too short, but I suppose we all have to go back to real life eventually.
Now I’ve got to go back to working and struggling through the most obnoxious of all online courses so I can get my TEFL certification and cement this China thing in place. Git’er done!
